The Adventure Pass is purchased to pay the Forest Service for expenses related to maintaining the forest. They can be purchased at a variety of places like REI, Sport Chalet, Big 5, etc. You can get a ticket for parking if you don't have one of these passes. Again, it is only for U.S. Forest Service locations.

Yes you can buy it at REI, I dont know if all REI store carry it or only the one closer to the mountains.
I've bought it a couple of times, I think it's general.
You'll have to scratch the scrather part of it for the date and month on that day.

Welcome to the club.
About Adventure Pass, try to Google: Adventure pass California.
But it's like a fee to use our nat. parks or some kind of donation to help maintain the nat. parks or something like that.
You can get it from some stores near by, they'll usually have a sign that they sell those pass. It's $5.
